Coffee & Conversation

March 8th at 7pm
Peace United Church of Christ
900 High Street, Santa Cruz, 95060

PFLAG is celebrating the art of conversation during the holidays. We are trying out a
new meeting format for the next couple of months. Instead of our formal meeting, with

hoping that this will be more welcoming and will allow us to more fully meet the needs
of parents and other members of the LGBTQ community.

You will notice that our logo is the same but the acronym for PFLAG has a new meaning.Our working draft is: Parents, Families, LGBTQ, and Allies Group—PFLAG.

Our new mission statement:

PFLAG SCC believes that our purpose is:

    • Support for families, allies, and people who are LGBTQ;
    • Education for ourselves and others about the unique issues and challenges facing people who are LGBTQ;
    • Advocacy in our community to change attitudes and create policies and laws that achieve full equality for people who are LGBTQ.

We welcome your support and participation. We hope to see you!

Contact us at pflagscc@gmail.com, www.pflagscc.org or call (831) 427-4016.

Out and Sober: Celebrating Stories of Recovery

Tuesday, September 8, 2015 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm
Peace United Church of Christ
900 High Street, Santa Cruz, 95060

Join PFLAGSCC for an evening full of stories of hope from a panel of LGBT people successfully pursuing recovery.  Drug abuse, alcohol, and addiction present major challenges for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Already high within the general population, rates of substance abuse increase substantially within the LGBT community alone. Find out why, and learn how people overcome this struggle every day, and live happy, joyous and free lives!

The first hour of the PFLAG Santa Cruz County (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians & Gays) meeting is dedicated to discussion groups followed by a brief break. The second hour is dedicated to our program. All are welcome!

About the Queer Youth Leadership Awards

The Queer Youth Task Force of Santa Cruz County honors local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) youth and their
allies at the annual Queer Youth Leadership Awards (QYLA)!

Nominees & Awardees are those who have shown outstanding leadership, academic excellence, or community engagement as an LGBTQ
youth under the age of 18, or as an ally to LGBTQ youth. Allies to LGBTQ youth may be a straight youth, or can also be a straight or
LGBTQ adult.

Community members throughout Santa Cruz County who know an LGBTQ youth who has made an effort to improve the lives of others,
or an ally who actively supports LGBTQ youth, nominated a deserving youth or ally for one of the 3 following awards categories:

  •  Queer Youth Leadership Award: for LGBTQ youth,
  • Ally to Queer Youth Award: for non-LGBTQ youth or any adult who identifies as an ally to LGBTQ youth,
  • Organizational Ally to Queer Youth Award for local organizations support or actively organize on behalf of LGBTQ youth.

QYLA recognitions help end isolation and fuel the passion, advocacy and activism needed for youth to be out, proud, and true to themselves. Their nomination is an integral part of our collective efforts to raise visibility and honor these tenacious young people and their allies!

The 2014 QYLA is being held at New Brighton Middle School on May 10th at 5:30 pm. For more information, visit www.QYLA.org
